Epilepsy plagued by misconceptions and fear
The 11-year-old Kitchener girl suffered her first big seizure a couple months ago. She was at a neighbour’s house when she fell, cutting her head on the concrete porch.
“I feel mostly scared in case I have another one,” Sierra said. “And I also feel bad for the people there who had to see that.”
Her second intense seizure was at school in the playground, but luckily that time she didn’t hurt herself when she dropped to the ground. When she woke up, she was surrounded by fellow students.
There’s a lot of misunderstanding and fear about the disorder, said Catherine Bodden, executive director of Epilepsy Waterloo-Wellington.

Student battles the myths
The 16-year-old London girl has heard people wonder if she's going to fall to the floor and start foaming at the mouth (it's highly unlikely), question how she can drive a car (just fine, thanks), or suggest the best thing to do for someone having an epileptic seizure is to hold them still and shove a wallet into their mouth (most definitely not).
And when she does have one of her petit mal seizures, which momentarily causes her eyelids to flutter and her eyes to roll up, Douglas knows some people think she's just being a snob.
"Some people have mistaken it for attitude," she says. "Like I'm rolling my eyes or batting my eyelashes."
